National Mental Health Pathways to Practice Program

The challenges nurses working in mental health care face as they transition into practice after graduation can be daunting.

But with the proper support and resources, they can thrive.

This is why APNA is launching the National Mental Health Pathways to Practice Program.

About the Program

Funded by the Department of Health and Aged Care and backed by four leading Australian universities (Monash and the Universities of Newcastle, Tasmania and South Australia) this free program builds on the success of our Transition to Practice Program.

It focuses on matching registered nurses who are in their first five years of practice – and who have recently completed postgraduate studies in mental health nursing – with experienced nurse mentors.

Mentors and mentees also gain access to our exclusive online Community of Practice forum, where they can connect with their peers for added support.

The program runs for six months.

Who can apply?

As this is a pilot program, applications are currently open to nurses based in New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria.

We're looking for nurses with:

  • experience working in mental health
  • who work in primary health care

The program offers you the full support of our expert team, access to tools and resources, and a payment of $1200 for your time.

Transitioning mental health nurses (mentees)

The program is open to mentees who:

  • are a registered nurse
  • work in any primary health care setting
  • have completed a postgraduate qualification in mental health nursing within the last five years.

As well as a mentor, you will also have access to our online Community of Practice, where you'll meet other nurses just like you.

Best of all, it's free!
