Essentials of Primary Health Care

Whether you're new to primary health care or seeking a refresher, the Essentials of Primary Health Care offers practical knowledge and skills to support nurses in this dynamic field. This one-day workshop — available both in-person and virtually — provides key insights and training to help you thrive in any primary care setting — Aged Care, Community, General Practice, Custodial, Schools, + many more.

This comprehensive workshop is designed to equip nurses with the essential skills and knowledge required to excel in primary care settings. With a focus on chronic conditions management, immunisation, Australian Health Care System, and professional practice, this program will empower nurses to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.



Key topics covered

  1. Chronic Conditions Management - This module will delve into the complexities of managing chronic conditions in primary care. Nurses will learn evidence-based strategies for assessing, monitoring, and managing common chronic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. The module will also cover disease burden, self-management strategies, and patient centred care planning.
  2. Immunisation - This module will provide a comprehensive overview of immunisation principles, practices, and Australian Immunisation Program guidelines. Nurses will develop the skills to administer vaccines safely and effectively, counsel patients about immunisation, and manage adverse events. The module will also address emerging issues in immunisation, such as vaccine hesitancy and new vaccine technologies.
  3. Australian Health Care System - Primary Health Care and APNA- This module will explore the intricacies of the Australian health care system, with a focus on primary health care. Nurses will gain a deep understanding of the role of primary care in the broader health system, the functions of primary health networks, and the impact of government policies on primary care delivery. The module will also delve into the role of the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA), including accreditation standards, and opportunities for professional development.
  4. Professional Practice - This module will equip nurses with the knowledge and skills to practice ethically and legally within the scope of practice. Nurses will explore the principles of professional practice, including accountability, autonomy, and beneficence. The module will also address issues such as delegation, supervision, and leadership in primary care settings.
  5. Clinical Assessment and Triage - This module will focus on the essential skills of clinical assessment and triage in primary care. Nurses will learn to conduct comprehensive assessments, identify urgent and non-urgent conditions, and prioritize patient care. The module will also cover the use of clinical decision-making tools and the importance of accurate documentation and communication.
  6. Infection Prevention and Control - This module will provide a comprehensive overview of infection prevention and control principles and practices. Nurses will learn to implement effective infection prevention and control measures to protect patients, staff, and the wider community. The module will also address emerging infectious diseases and the role of primary care in pandemic preparedness and response.
  7. Wound management - This module will provide an overview of effective wound management techniques. Nurses will learn about essential aspects of wound care, including accurate wound assessment, appropriate cleaning, the selection and application of various dressings. The session will also address potential complications related to wound healing and explore preventive measures to ensure optimal outcomes.
