Primary health care is any medical service that is provided outside the four walls of a hospital, including aged care, community health, general practice, custodial, schools and many other primary health care settings. Australia's 98,000+ primary health care nurses play a critical role in disease prevention and control to keep people healthy. They provide proactive care and health promotion to keep Australians well.
Nurses, students, professionals and employers: join APNA today for unparalleled growth and support in primary health care.
APNA’s annual Workforce Survey has provided a comprehensive picture of the working conditions and professional concerns of primary health care nurses and midwives across Australia for over 15 years. It remains the only national survey focusing exclusively on the nearly 100,000 nurses and midwives who work outside the four walls of a hospital and in primary health care.
We need your help to build a bigger picture about primary health care nursing and midwifery in Australia so we can continue to lobby governments for more support of this critical health workforce.
Please note: this is a preview version of the toolkit. The content, such as the flyer and social media posts, will not be finalised until early October when a link to the survey will be included.
This toolkit is designed to support our primary health care partners in promoting the APNA Workforce Survey 2024.
If you have any questions about the toolkit or would like to request resources tailored for your organisation, please email our communications coordinator, Dani Neal.
Complete the APNA Workforce Survey between Monday, 14 October, and Tuesday, 31 December.

The Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association’s annual Workforce Survey is the only national survey focusing exclusively on nurses and midwives working outside of our hospitals and in the community.
We use what you tell us about your working conditions, concerns, and aspirations when helping governments and policymakers better understand primary health care nursing and midwifery and how they can better utilise, attract, and retain this vital workforce.
