Antidepressants in teens and young adults

More young people are seeking mental health support. Suicide is the leading cause of death among young Australians. Analysis of Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) data indicates that antidepressant use among Australian adolescents and young adults under 18 doubled between 2012 and 2023.

When primary health care nurses encounter young patients, there is an opportunity to create a non-judgmental environment where they feel listened to, informed and supported.
