Primary health care is any medical service that is provided outside the four walls of a hospital, including aged care, community health, general practice, custodial, schools and many other primary health care settings. Australia's 98,000+ primary health care nurses play a critical role in disease prevention and control to keep people healthy. They provide proactive care and health promotion to keep Australians well.

In a resounding tribute to the vital contribution of primary health care nurses, APNA made history with the launch of the inaugural Primary Health Care Nurses Day on 7 February 2024. This landmark event was dedicated to honouring and celebrating the invaluable role of primary health care nurses. It also marked a significant milestone in recognising their dedication and expertise as well as their impact on patient care and community health.
From its inception, Primary Health Care Nurses Day has captured the hearts and minds of nurses, healthcare professionals, policymakers, businesses and the wider community across Australia. APNA shone a spotlight on the diverse and dynamic role of primary health care nurses, showcasing their unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation in healthcare delivery.
For the inaugural Primary Health Care Nurses Day, APNA challenged people’s perception of what a primary health care nurse is and what they do. Our campaign, ‘The Anatomy of a Primary Health Care Nurse’, revealed how nurses operate daily and how the variety of their role is a ‘complete body of work.’
At the heart of the celebrations was a profound sense of gratitude and appreciation for the tireless efforts of primary health care nurses in providing high-quality, patient-centred care to individuals and families in communities across Australia. Through their compassion, expertise and advocacy, these dedicated professionals play a pivotal role in promoting health, preventing disease, and improving health outcomes for all Australians.
The highlight of Primary Health Care Nurses Day was the in-person and online events, hosted by businesses and individuals across the country. The day saw a flurry of activity and engagement on social media platforms, with nurses and healthcare organisations sharing their stories, insights and reflections on the impact of primary health care nursing. And there was a lot of celebration cake consumed!
The outpouring of support and appreciation from colleagues, patients and the broader community underscored the profound influence of primary health care nurses on the lives of individuals and communities.
Furthermore, APNA took Primary Health Care Nurses Day to the national stage with a landmark visit to Parliament House in Canberra. A group of nurses, together with the APNA advocacy team, met with politicians to advocate for recognition and advancement of primary health care nursing on a national level. Discussions included nurse-led team models of care and examples of how enabling nurses to work to their full scope of practice improves health access and population health outcomes for Australian communities.
APNA highlighted the critical role of primary health care nurses and raised awareness of the unique contributions and challenges faced by these essential frontline workers, paving the way for greater recognition, support and investment in the nursing workforce.
By uniting nurses, healthcare professionals, policymakers and the community in a shared celebration of nursing excellence, APNA has reaffirmed its role as a leading advocate for the nursing profession and a champion for better health outcomes for all Australians.
