Nurses can do more in general practice

APNA focused last week on highlighting the critical role nurses play in general practice, starting with a media statement on Monday (6 October).
"We know that nurses play a critical role, and if we break down barriers there's an opportunity to do so much more", said APNA President Denise Lyons.
Early on Tuesday, ABC Radio 's AM program highlighted the issue of GP surgeries being "swamped with mental health patients". It featured Denise alongside GP Dr Kenneth McCroary and Dr Michael Wright from the Royal Australian College of GPs. One solution proposed was to allow nurses and psychologists to work alongside GPs, which Denise strongly supported.
"Those nurses working in general practice are already regularly undertaking things like immunisation administration, wound care, infection prevention and control, chronic disease management, care planning, care navigation."
Also on Tuesday morning, Denise and Board Director Karen Booth attended the launch of The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) 2025 Health of the Nation report at Parliament House in Canberra.
